Viva Italia: Some Peeps

I’m going to continue to milk this Italian cow in an effort to update my blog. Still dealing with the volume of photos from our long-past vacation. Still dealing with lack of motivation time to do so. But I wanted to share some of my favorite people shots from Italy as we made our way through Venice, Florence, Tuscany, the Amalfi Coast, and Rome. Caveat is that there is a distinction between photos of people representing Italy vs. photos of people that happened to be shot while in Italy. Seeing as how I’m not on assignment for Nat Geo or Conde Naste I get to be judge and jury here, but I would hesitate to call many of these “travel” photos per se.

Sorrento. Amalfi Coast. Destination of the stars at the edge of the Bay of Naples. Also features some of the most insane driving and traffic I have ever experienced. If I would have had ammunition upon entering this place in our rental car I sure as hell would have used it.
Beautiful little town with the usual accoutrements: small alleys packed with shops and gellatrias and cafes and restaurants and people. Also a very cool bathing platform thingy as shown below…
But otherwise a bust photo-wise of any note; did not get the coastal city landscape shots I was hoping for, mostly mundane observations and details of the city. What is pervasive in my mind about this place, however, is said insanity of traffic. At any given moment you are at risk of getting taken out by a bus, car, scooter, goofy 3-wheel delivery truck, bike, wild dog or pedestrian. It’s ridiculous. And probably nowhere more nuts than the Via Marina Piccola, a deep canyon/roadway with a “sidewalk” that leads to the Marina Piccola. This shit is amusing from above, serial-killer-inducing while below.
We saw some dude wearing a shirt saying something along the lines of “Don’t Make Me Go All Dexter On Your Ass” which is pretty apropos.

Better late than never.
Volume 2 of these brief stops along the Italian Planes Trains & Automobiles Tour comes on the eve of our leaving yet another destination (more to come). It’s difficult to find the time to manage the volumes of photos while also enjoying all that this wonderful country has to offer and avoid neglecting my family. And in the heart of Italian wine country there are bigger fish to fry, but I digress.

I hadn’t intended on publishing anything else until we left Florence, but going through photos and making selects gave me pause. As we get ready to go out and enjoy what Firenze has to offer I give my daughter a little lesson in humility. She has the good fortune to enjoy views like this:
This fellow, unfortunately, sees life a little different yet sits only 10 feet away from where the above was taken.
It’s worth giving thanks from time to time.

The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.
That would have been me during a recent trip to beautiful Montreal. With my camera firmly resting on a tripod (Really Right Stuff – you guys rule), aimed up at the monolithic structure that is the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal. And yours truly bent down trying to frame the damn thing. Even with a 24mm lens it barely fit.
