Back from a short-but-sweet trip to Canada’s premier wine country (in my humble opinion – really haven’t been wowed by Niagara grape). Kelowna is a jewel that offers a beautiful lakefront setting, consistent weather, and a casual atmosphere. And did I mention the wine?
Earlier I had posted a shot of clouds rolling back over the mountains surrounding Okanagan Lake. That theme continued during the brief periods I had to shoot.
As with my previous blurb these look much more menacing than reality. What is black at the top of the frame was in fact clear blue sky. This, friends, is why you shoot color even if an image is destined for black and white. Much more control than if it’s done in camera.
Over the Mountain
Another “cloudy mountain” opportunity presented itself while across the lake at Cedar Creek Winery. Heavy weather was brewing (though, thankfully, amounted to little) and combined with the setting sun created streaks of godrays that layered the mountain ranges with pools of light. From the moment I lifted the camera I knew how I wanted the final frame to look. Converted to black and white in Silver Efex Pro 2 with copious local contrast applied in Photoshop.
Lest one think it was all gloom and doom I did try and capture some light and warmth where it appeared. But, truthfully, the sunsets didn’t deliver on the vibrant drama I had hoped for.
Stop Yer Wining
We had the good fortune to visit the good people at Cedar Creek Winery. In between snorts of some very nice grape (their Merlot rocked) and a private wine tour for our group I had a chance to pop a few frames. If you find yourself in Kelowna and looking for a beautiful setting and fine wine I encourage you to pay them a visit.
Color and Character
A photowalk through any given town is sure to include my usual contribution of nonsense – splashes of color or weird perspectives just because. Kelowna is no doubt a colorful place.
Cheers.
