It’s a cool, crisp, clear morning here on the prairies. Low light and burms of snow make for interesting shape and texture. Conveniently located out of my window.

In between periods shooting at the rink yesterday this caught my eye. Cold winter afternoon in only a moderately warmer rural arena. Metal door frosted up. And a nice “in case of fire” pull right beside it. If that thing actually started a fire I would have been very tempted. Regardless, I liked the contrast and irony.

I find it miraculous how quickly time blows past. Take for instance the fact that my last blog update was “way back” on November 19th and I’ve done sweet FA since. Lots of photos taken, but I haven’t had the energy or motivation or time or some combination of each to actively post. Mired in “what to do”.

White balance. The color of white. Seems so simple but that’s because our eyes are so good at adapting to color changes. Put a white piece of paper under a yellow/orange table lamp, or a sickly green fluorescent light, or oddball magenta sodium vapor in an industrial or gym setting. Our eyes will make that white page look white. Or at least white’ish. But the camera needs to make adjustments to compensate. Either automatically (choosing the AutoWB setting), through a fixed preset (ex. Incendescent or Fluorescent), or via a custom white balance. The latter is not always as easy as it sounds if you don’t have a reliable neutral reference handy. Enter a little gizmo called the baLens white balance lens cap from BRNO.

Airport lounges make travel easier. Much easier. More enjoyable on many dimensions. And while they’re well secluded from the chaos of the main terminal it’s still a busy place with plenty of hustle and bustle.
